International Comparative
Studies of Adult Literacy and PreK-12 Education
The U.S. Department
of Education’s Institute for Educational Sciences’ International
Center for Education Statistics. You will find the Adult Literacy
and Lifeskills (ALL), International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS),
and Adult Education Program Study (AEPS) studies here.
- ALL: The
Adult Literacy and Lifeskills (ALL) Survey is an international
comparative study designed to provide participating countries, including
the United States, with information about the skills of their adult
populations. The ALL measured the literacy and numeracy skills of a
nationally representative sample from each participating country. On
a pilot basis, the ALL also measured adults' problem-solving skills
and gathered information on their familiarity with information and communication
technologies. The ALL builds on the foundation of earlier studies of
adult literacy. Chief among these earlier studies is the International
Adult Literacy Survey (IALS), which was conducted in three phases
(1994, 1996 and 1998) in 20 nations including the United States.

- AEPS:An
additional Adult Education Program Study (AEPS) uses similar techniques
to measure the skills of adults enrolled in adult education programs.http://nces.ed.gov/Surveys/ALL/AEPS.asp
- G8 Indicator report:
describes how the U.S. education system compares with those in the Group
of Eight, or G8, countries. These are the eight most industrialized
countries in the world, whose representatives meet regularly to discuss
economic and other policy issues: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan,
the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The
countries were selected for comparison because they are relatively similar
to the United States in their economic development and because they
are among our major economic competitors.
