News and Notes from the National Institute for Literacy

Dr. Sandra L. Baxter, Director

WHAT'S NEW AT THE INSTITUTE

* Institute Convenes its Advisory Board and Interagency
Partners:

With a packed two-day agenda before them, the Institute's 10-member Advisory
Board and its Interagency Management Group, will gather on Wednesday,
January 30 and on Tuesday, January 31, for its scheduled quarterly meeting.
Meeting highlights include discussion of a proposed plan for the Institute's
strategic direction; updates on Institute projects and activities; a review
of adult literacy research themes and priorities; a presentation on
post-Katrina workforce priorities and the need to build the educational
capacity of the Greater New Orleans area; and the Director's report (a copy
of the report will be posted on our website this week). Both sessions will
begin at 8:30 a.m. and will be held at the Institute's headquarters, 1775 I
St., NW, Suite 730, Washington, DC 20006

* Institute to Issue Two New Spanish-language Publications:

As the need for Spanish-language publications and resources for families of
K-3 children who are learning to speak and read in English grows, the
Institute is working to create two new book titles to support parents. In
2006 when the Institute expanded its offering of print publications for
parents of pre-school and K-3 children, the list included La Lectura es lo
Primero (Put Reading First), its first-ever Spanish-language book. Today, La
Lectura es lo Primero ranks No. 1 in Spanish-language publications
distributed by the U.S. Department of Education's EdPubs Clearinghouse. To

* Two-city Pilot Project Aimed at Parents/Families with
Low Literacy Skills:

In February, the Institute will launch a two-city, literacy training pilot
project to actively engage parents in learning simple, effective strategies
that they can do with their K-3 children at home. Support and interest from
teachers and administrators in Sommerville Public Schools (Massachusetts)
and in Warwick Public Schools (Rhode Island), the pilot sites, has been
overwhelming. The parent-focused training materials will use
scientifically-based reading research and incorporate existing Institute
booklets. The project will train teachers and other educators from these
school districts to lead the 12-week parent sessions, which are expected to
run from February to May.
