* At COABE: Get a Preview of Institute's New Training Program for Adults with Learning Disabilities and its Research Foundations

Plan to attend a preview of Learning to Achieve, the Institute's new professional development training program serving adults with learning disabilities during COABE Session A on Sunday, April 19, from 3:30 - 4:45 p.m. Learning to Achieve, set to launch this summer, is a five-day training to support adult education and vocational training practioners, social workers, and other human services providers who need to understand learning disabilities in adults and how to actively support them in educational and workplace settings.

During the COABE session titled National Institute for Literacy: Serving Adults with Learning Disabilities - Research Foundations, Debi Basu, the Institute's program officer for education and learning disabilities, will also present the results of an extensive literature review on the research foundations relevant to programs serving learning disabled adults. This research forms the knowledge basis of the Learning to Achieve training. She will be joined by Juliana Taymans, Ph.D., a professor of special education within the Transition Special Education program at the George Washington University in Washington, DC.

This new literature review titled Learning to Achieve: A Review of the Research Literature on Serving Adults with Learning Disabilities, offers the best information currently available on topics such as assessment; impact of learning disabilities; accommodations; teaching methods; English language learners; and transitioning. Copies of the literature review will be released in June 2009. To order copies of this report, call 1(800) 288-8813 or e-mail: edpubs at inet.ed.gov<mailto:edpubs at inet.ed.gov>
