WHAT'S NEW AT THE INSTITUTE:

 

U.S. Department of Education's Office of Vocational and Adult Education and
the National Institute for Literacy Convene Two-Day Forum  

Educating Low-Skilled Adults and Investments to 

Adult Education on the Agenda

 

WASHINGTON (July 7, 2009) -- Representatives from the National Institute for
Literacy (Institute) and the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE)
will join more than 50 national education and literacy leaders at the U.S.
Department of Education on July 7-8, to discuss federal funding and
strategies for advancing the field of adult education. Participation in
these meetings is by invitation only. 

"During the two days here, we plan to update participants on the scope of
national investments related to adult education," said Daniel J. Miller,
acting director of the Institute and a presenter. "We also want to solicit
input from key stakeholders related to research and development needs and
innovative approaches to educating low-skilled adults," Miller added.

The Institute <http://www.nifl.gov/>  (http://www.nifl.gov), created in
1991, was proposed by the Administration in May for elimination. Under the
Administration's proposal, OVAE would take primary responsibility for the
adult literacy agenda at the Department, and would absorb the resources now
appropriated to the Institute.
