I apologize to those of you with slower internet access. I should not
have posted this email from Lloyd with the attachment. It slipped by me.

And let me just say to other list members that if you have a message to
post that has an attachment, you should either put the content of the
message within the email or, if the attachment is something that is
online, just put the URL as a direct link within your message. The
problem with attachments is that, for those with slower dial up
connections, some email clients insist on downloading all attachments,
and when these list members get a message with an attachment, it can tie
up their machine for a long while until it is finished downloading that
attachment. I intend not to approve any messages with attachments, but
this one just slipped by me.

Thanks, all, for your help and consideration.

Susan,
I recently read about your portal for workplace education. I looked
briefly
at the list of items, and did not see a mention of a study which we did
here
evaluating a workplace education program in a distribution center. Our
study showed that the students in the classes when compared with other
workers doing similar jobs had better attendance at work and made fewer
errors. The supervisors were the recipient of the greatest benefit of
the
English as a Working Language classes since they no longer needed
interpreters, and the workers asked questions when they did not
understand
something. Finally, the company benefited in a big way since turnover
among
the workers in the classes was 0 while in the company as a whole the
number
was 44%. I am attaching a copy for your files.

All

It was heartening, too, at the Centre for Literacy's ESL/Literacy
Institute,
this past June, to hear more about what we might (or might
not) see as something of a revival of all of this - work from the US and
Canada, but also from the UK's National Research and Development Centre
for
Adult Literacy and Numeracy - http://www.nrdc.org.uk/index.asp - a LOT
of
stuff - including many downloadable documents on ESOL, literacy,
workplace
stuff and other related pieces.

You're probably also aware of a number of resources from Canada, New
Zealand
and elsewhere - some of which are gathered here:
