FBCOs Eligible

For DOL Prisoner

Re-entry Grants

Faith-based and community organizations (FBCOs) in 19 counties can apply
for $5.7 million now available
<http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2008/pdf/E8-20570.pdf>  from the U.S.
Department of Labor (DOL). Initial awards of $300,000 will help provide
post-release services to prisoners receiving pre-release services under
an earlier grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. This competition
is limited to FBCOs operating in Jefferson County, Ala.; Maricopa
County, Ariz.; Los Angeles County, Calif.; Denver County, Colo.;
Fairfield County, Conn.; New Castle County, Del.; Cook County, Ill.;
Allen County, Ind.; Caddo and Bossier Parishes, La.; Baltimore County,
Md.; Genesee County, Mich.; Greene County, Mo.; Clarke County, Nev.;
Mercer County, N.J.; Erie County, N.Y.; Tulsa County, Okla.;
Philadelphia County, Pa.; Davidson County, Tenn.; and Milwaukee, Wis.
Applications close Nov. 4, 2008.

Transition Grants

Connecticut's Department of Education has granted $750,000 of Adult
Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) funds to 17 local providers to
offer postsecondary transition courses

9|#45579>  to adult education students. Grantees include 13 local
education agencies, a community college, two FBCOs, and a state-managed
school. Funds will provide nearly 1,000 students with math, reading and
writing skills that align with college courses. Students also will learn
study skills and computer applications. Support for students includes
career and postsecondary counseling, assistance in applying for
financial aid, and on-site Accuplacer testing. The state required a 25
percent local match for these grants.

Nanotechnology

Curriculum

The National Science Foundation has funded partners Danville Community
College (DCC) and Luna Innovations to provide nanotechnology technician
training
<http://www.smalltimes.com/articles/article_display.cfm?Section=ONART&C=
Educa&ARTICLE_ID=339064&p=109>  to Southside Virginia residents. The
$638,000 grant will create a curriculum to provide students with
technical skills for work in this new field. The grant will enable DCC
students to earn an associate degree in the nanotechnology technician
track. Ten area employers signed on as project partners stating their
companies need the skills students will learn in the new program. DCC's
goal is to create a national industry certification program.
