Sandy and Others,

We are part of the "Learner Web" national project (led by Dr. Steve Reder of Portland State University) which is developing a system of free on-line learning resources for adult learners. Our college is developing a "career pathways" component of that system which (we hope) learners will use to develop (a) personal career plans, (b) transferable work readiness skills, and (c) knowledge of career opportunities in a number of industries.

To create this "Learner Web Career Pathways," we have been searching for existing on-line resources which are easily accessible, relevant, and easy to use for lower-skilled learners. We have so far assembled a working list of such resources and are beginning to field test them with various populations of the adult learners we serve in our community college's adult basic skills and workforce development programs. For example, ex-offenders in our prisoner re-entry program are now using these web sites to help them identify job goals, clarify the supports available to them, explore various career opportunities, and prepare resumes and portfolios to take with them when visiting employers. This use of on-line resources is blended with face-to-face, participatory learning activities and work in the computer lab (where they make PowerPoints in which they present information -- illustrated with clip art and attractive colors -- that they generate through the face-to-face and on-line learning activities. Some of the learners never touched a computer before jumping into making these PowerPoints.)

This has lots of potential. When we get a little further along in this, we are happy to share what we are doing in this project. We also welcome suggestions of useful web sites which adult learners can use for the above described purposes.

Hello,
I'm hoping that you folks might be able to provide suggestions to our programs. We are attempting to compile a list of web links to learner-centered web resources that relate to workplace skills. This is primarily for use in a computer lab with ESOL adults. If you know of any great resources, I'd love to hear from you. Email privately if you prefer to sandyc at bigbend.edu. Thanks so much.
Sandy
