Comparison of the Beginners Group Profiles
Silent Reading GE 0-2

All members of Profiles 10 and 11 have silent reading comprehension scores between GE 0 and 2. This page compares these profiles using the information presented in the line graph and tables below. Both the line graph and the table beneath it present the average scores of Profiles 10-11.

Both patterns of reading strengths can be found in Silent Reading GE 0-2 classrooms.

At this level of silent reading comprehension, there are large differences in educational history and aptitude between Native Speakers of English (NSE) and Non-native Speakers of English (NNSE) that affect progress. Therefore, we divided the entire group to make the two profiles. Profile 10 (blue) is made up of 100% Native Speakers of English (NSE), while Profile 11 (red) is made up of 100% Non-native Speakers of English (NNSE).

A Line graph displaying the average scores for Profiles 10 and 11. This information is also presented in the table below.
Reading Component Profile 10 Profile 11
   Word Recognition 2.5 2.7
   Spelling 2.1 2.0
   Word Meaning
   (Vocabulary)
3.4 1.8
   Silent Reading 1.0 1.0
Oral Reading Rate 109 wpm 102 wpm

The two profiles diverge only on Word Meaning. Predictably, Profile 10 (the NSE) readers are able to give more English word meanings than Profile 11 (the NNSE) readers.

Profile 10 (NSE) shows a strong familial strain of reading problems. Three-quarters of them report a history of reading difficulties with over half of those having had trouble in the reading acquisition years--grades 1-3. NSE readers at this level are severely reading disabled.

Profile 11 (NNSE) is low across the board, but fewer had problems learning to read their native language. We wouldn't expect this group to have the same print skills difficulties as those in Profile 10.
